Similarly with the idea that these people didn't make bad choices, they had bad things happen to them; that's addiction too. No one starts using drugs if they aren't suffering already. People know the risks and the taboo, but they need something to keep them going when they don't have anything else.

Even if they were drug users, it shouldn't matter. Some people start sober but living rough is brutal and they need to self medicate to survive it. Some are addicts from the beginning of homelessness, but addiction is a hell few can comprehend and they should be given compassion, not disdain.

We all know praying to the wrong God(s) is justification for torture in their eyes but now praying the wrong things to God is too.
And it's even more messed up that the wrong thing is praying that humanity give a shit about each other and innocents don't die in misery.
