One common example of a surface-level understanding of the child is seeing video games as a cause for isolation or mental health difficulties, rather than a way to cope with an often chaotic, unpredictable, and isolating school experience. Games can give the young person a creative outlet, a sense of control and achievement, and access to communities of shared interests. It can be the only safe space they have available in their lives.

This is exactly how it can feel fighting for a #ActuallyAutistic YP with an EHCP. Constantly hearing that the system (education/health) is 'working on it'. A happier ending, we gave up waiting for "the system', found our own tribe, are now & surrounded by colour, life & love.

Their criticisms of particular treatments and intervention approaches are grounded in the belief that aiming to normalise someone’s behaviour is a form of ableism (i.e. discrimination, bias and prejudice against the disabled), inferring inferiority and favouring the non-disabled.
