Bertram Fitzgerald was an accountant who grew up an avid reader, & that included Classics Illustrated comics. In 1966, he launched Golden Legacy Illustrated History Magazine, a comic book focusing on important figures in Black history that published until 1976. #BlackHistoryMonth

Today is the birthday of pulp magazine and comic book artist Allen Anderson (Jan. 31, 1908-Oct. 23, 1995).
Amazing Adventures #4 (1951). The cover shows a robot embracing a woman while a little green alien watches them with a creepy smile on his face. Lars of Mars #11 (1951). The cover shows Lars in a space suit and jet pack shooting at a large, green octopus-like monster. Romantic Marriage #8 (1951). The cover shows a newly married couple being showered with confetti. Amazing Adventures #2 (1951). The cover shows a man and a woman in futuristic costumes in jail cells. An ugly, green alien is looking at the girl from outside the cells.

Jackie Robinson, born on January 31, 1919. This series, published by Fawcett Comics starting in 1949, was the first ongoing comic book series to feature a Black American as the title star.
Issue #1. The cover is a closeup of Jackie smiling and in the lower left corner is a black and white photo of him swinging a bat. Issue #2, which shows Jackie in his Dodgers uniform holding a baseball bat.

Flash Gordon by Alex Raymond from January 31, 1937.
In this five-panel strip, Flash and Dale Arden are lost in the jungle when Flash gets entangled in a strangler vine. Dale retrieves Flash’s gun to save him but gets too close to the plant and is caught as well. Fortunately, a bolt of lightning hits the tree and frees them both.

2026 has been horrible so far, so I'm going to retreat for a bit and spend my Friday night watching Magnum PI.

I have three more of these from the 1920s.
"Skeezix and Pal" by Frank King shows Skeezix with his dog, Pal. "Skeezix Out West" by Frank King shows Skeezix riding a horse and waving with his hat. He is dressed as a cowboy. We can see Walt in shadow nearby. "Skeezix at the Circus" by Frank King shows Skeezix being held by a clown while Walt looks on.

Jim Aparo: Brave & Bold Artist by Eric Nolan Weathington and Jim Amash. The cover is a slightly different take on his cover to The Brave and the Bold #124 (1976). Little Nemo in Slumberland from January 30, 1910.
In this installment, Nemo and his crew use their airship to rescue the passengers of a sinking ship from the ocean. We can see his crew dropping ladders down to retrieve people from lifeboats and directly from the water. In the final panel, the airship lets the rescued passengers off on land.

Pogo by Walt Kelly from January 30, 1955.
In the first three panels of this Sunday comic, Pogo explains to Albert Alligator that he is going to read him the story of Cinderella (here, “Cinderola and the Three Bears”). In the remaining eight panels, we see the story unfold in Walt Kelly-style with Pogo as Cinderola and Albert as the wicked stepmother.

So I don't leave the wrong impression of Crane's work for people who are unfamiliar, he was great at action too.

Roy Crane was truly a master at placing beautiful women in prominent positions in panels even though they had nothing to do with anything else going on.
The left side of the panel is a close-up of a beautiful woman. Behind her, to the right, we can see Buz Sawyer assuring his pal, Roscoe Sweeney, that he will try to pull some strings to get the stationed together.
