“Hmm. This stunt used to work better in the old days.”

**36YR OLD SPOILER!!**
Flint Henry debuts as artist and writer John Ostrander kicks this issue off 200 years in the future. Two freakin’ centuries! That was not the change I was predicting but it’s exciting any way you look at it.

A bonus when collecting these Baxter reprint series is that many of them had wraparound covers. For example, this gorgeous Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez Batman & Green Arrow for The Best of the Brave and the Bold #1 (1988)

30 minutes in to Klaus and really enjoying it. How did I not hear about this film til now, yet it came out back in 2019!

“Yeah, well… this is all a little more cosmic than I’m used to.”

The quote is from two pages later, but I had to include it with this double page splash. This was Tom Mandrake‘s final issue of Grimjack and it was solid, but the “dangerous new beginning” advertised didn’t happen here as I expected.

TMNT Universe #9 with Angel and Alopex was giving me major Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki) vibes but never more so than this beautiful double page splash by artist Pablo Tunica

I’ve fallen WAAYYY behind on my TMNT reading considering I just order Vol.18

Don’t let the angry Slash cover fool you, tonight I’m using Vol.9 to help carry me off to blissful sleep.

A couple of new back issue series to start collecting, a couple to hopefully finish, and a few single issues to track down. Plus, a trio of consistent familiar objectives, that still keep me focused all year.

FF #48 is a longshot.
But dare to dream right!

Artist John K Snyder and writer Kim Yale bringing some heat to this issue’s Munden’s Bar 8-page backup story, “Shadows in the Rain”. Highly recommended

“I have tried to escape – in suicide, in madness, in drink, drugs, or sex – and I have found no relief. It is a burden I cannot bear yet cannot put down.”

Dramatic drop on double page splash as the stage sets for the next phase of Grimjack. Also Rico Rival inking Mandrake was a fantastic pairing.

Top Shelf Friday time 🎉

Because I found out 40 years late that Grimjack was one of the best 80’s comics titles being published, my choice this week is the character’s first appearance in the backup story from Starslayer #10 (1983)

Argghhh! I placed my order two weeks ago and am only now getting a notice they don’t have two of my books available to ship. That kinda flies in the face of their company name. 🤨

*I’ve had numerous previous transactions go perfectly fine. This is just a disappointing one.

I mean, the answer is obvious… unless you already have it!

Ad for Issue #55 that appeared in Grimjack #52. Looks like a major shake up is in the works, which is a bit surprising since John Gaunt only just returned from the dead a year ago.

But Ostrander hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Wherever Grimjack is (was) headed, I’m here for it.

For even more laughs, this issue’s backup tale has Sam & Max visiting Munden’s Bar before quickly making their way to Egypt to confront the aliens responsible for building the pyramids.

You read that right. 😆

“Nonsense. This is classic Mid-1950’s America! This is bowling!”

A bit of fun this issue as Judah the Hammer brings Grimjack back to Cynosure and the two go out bowling together. Also, if you’re keeping track, this has to be at least the third time the Shadow and Batman have both shown up, right? 😂

If I had read this “Around the World” article back in 1982, I might have jumped on board and started picking up 2000 AD. It was probably another 6 years before I would read an issue of the magazine and my first #JudgeDredd story. I’m still woefully underexposed to the British phenomenon.

Bonus read today: Munden’s Bar Annual #1, with three all-new tales and containing three previously published stories from the regular backup feature in the monthly Grimjack comic.
