His wife, the great Norma Waterson, was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize as he just has been. She is part of this, and him, even now. I listen to them singing all the time and if I'm lucky enough to die singing, as Blake did, it will probably be one of the songs I learned from them.

Excellent that Martin Carthy’s “Transform Me Then Into A Fish” is shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. His fascinating book, written with Stephen Sedley, ‘Who Killed Cock Robin?: British Folk Songs of Crime and Punishment’ is in paperback from @reaktionbooks.bsky.social. (I helped publish it, btw).

I cannot tell you how joyous it would be if Martin Carthy won the Mercury Prize. I love his latest home-made album so much. So old and worn, so fresh and new. 👑

The new Martin Carthy album is almost upon us. It’s not the first time he’s revisited songs from his past. Check out my Spotify playlist - different VERSIONS of the same, similar or related songs from Martin’s solo, duo and band recordings.
