This is great. Although, my heuristic is already ‘if in doubt, buy the Burnt Mill’ so it’s nice to have that validated

This is going to be useful for my next trip to stare at the CC fridges

Saw this the other day and it’s of a piece bsky.app/profile/vict...
fascinating Covent Garden brothel case at the Old Bailey in 1852. owner punched out a drunken customer who refused to pay 2s (double for two girls) & propped him up against a wall. maid-servant helped and hurried back to 'sheet up' more beds, as "a great many were waiting for the rooms to vacated".

One of my absolute favourites, this one. Just perfectly self-contained

Actually surprisingly unhelpful given what you can actually see

Does shawarma count? Work trip to Palestine, lamb shawarma from our driver’s family’s cafe in East Jerusalem. Incredible, I still think about it years later

Are you familiar with David Starkey

I feel like this story is mostly the unions briefing about it so they can loudly make it clear they’re not up for any nonsense? But what do I know

It could raise up to £1.7m a year!

It has the largest concentration of roller-coasters in Europe. It has the continent’s second most popular tourist attraction, the forty-two-acre Pleasure Beach, whose 6.5 million annual visitors are exceeded in number only by those going to the Vatican.’

All a bit ‘citation needed’ even in 1995.

‘Blackpool – and I don’t care how many times you hear this, it never stops being amazing – attracts more visitors every year than Greece and has more holiday beds than the whole of Portugal. It consumes more chips per capita than anywhere on the planet. (It gets through 40 acres of potatoes a day.)

That’s the one. I don’t have a copy to hand unfortunately but I don’t think the claim is rigorously referenced

This stat is in Bill Bryson’s going round Britain book I think, so quite some time ago. Would be surprised if it’s still true, whether or not it was at the time

Reading that is like being in a greengrocer’s. What if you want to watch a film and drink wine that *doesn’t* taste of peaches?
August 10, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Yeah, that’s tough. Hopefully the peer pressure kicks in soon, that often helps

Mine refused to eat or drink anything at nursery for the first week. Eventually they basically force-fed him and he realised it was fine and ate normally from then on. Not suggesting this necessarily

Saw it on the first run. My old English teacher was one of the characters and there were a couple of other recognisable people. The level of accuracy of the impersonation was incredible, a really uncanny theatre experience on top of quality of the production itself

Even better, the students can now just get the AI to be shocked and offended on their behalf
