Pro tip: Don’t just agree with this thread! 😏

Apply the Kalama Sutta. Poke holes in these ideas. Meditate on them. See if they hold up. That’s the heart of Spiritual Empiricism: truth through experience, not blind faith.

How to practice Spiritual Empiricism?

🧘‍♂️ Start with meditation.
Observe your mind like a scientist studies data.

Question everything—don’t just swallow ideas. The Kalama Sutta says: Test it, live it, *prove* it.

What’s one belief you’ll question today?

Liberation means changing habits before it’s too late. It demands action, not just intellectual understanding.

Spiritual Empiricism is action which aims to break the chains and liberate us from subconscious thoughts patterns and actions.

We might say the same with climate change 🌍 We *understand* it’s urgent—stats, storms, and heatwaves scream it. But do we *realize* it enough to act?

Ever said “life is short” but still binged TV shows 📺 while ignoring life’s brevity?

We all subconsciously believe we will live until old age. Often it takes the death of a young person to give us some insight. Even then, life takes over again and we go back to forgetting it.

Some smokers will continue to smoke through a hole in their throat, never truly being liberated from their addiction.

Principle #2: Understanding ≠ Realization ≠ Liberation

Think of smokers 🚬

Most understand the idea that smoking kills, but do they *realize* it? Often, it takes a health scare to truly get it. Even then, breaking free from addiction is another step.

Key Principle #1: The Kalama Sutta 🙏

Don’t trust rumors, traditions, or even teachers blindly. Only accept what you’ve tested and found true through reason & observation. - Buddha

It’s a skeptic’s creed for spiritual growth! 🕉️

Buddhism ☸️ = quintessentially spiritual. But it’s also empirical. How? It’s all about observing your mind through your senses
👀👂🖐️👃👅

No blind faith here – test everything yourself! 🧐

“If any religion fits modern science, it’s Buddhism.” - Einstein

Non-physicalist theories offer very little by way of explanation of the hows of qualia.
June 11, 2025 at 10:48 AM
It would explain *why* consciousness is correlated with certain physical processes, but then simply asserting that consciousness emerges as a result of physical processes would equally explain *why* they are correlated.

The important question is how.
June 11, 2025 at 10:48 AM
If science doesn't offer a sufficient explanation, then it can't be relied upon in a theory which tries to piggy back off it. Simply asserting that consciousness is intrinsic to physical particles doesn't explain the appearance of specific qualia.

very much amenable to the idea that consciousness is, in some way, fundamental but it's a big stretch to say philosophers have "explain[ed] what needs explaining".

How does Panpsychism explain the appearance of specific qualia e.g. a red car?
