And to think that I was advised to eat fructose in place of sugar, as a type 1 diabetic! This was the 90s, but still... #T1D

Definitely look into it. It's not for everyone, but for me it's the next best thing to a cure. No more carb counting, I can simply eyeball my meals, bolus roughly the same each time, and I have a non-diabetic HbA1c as a result.

I can't help wondering whether a reliance on ultra-processed foods and a lack of availability of healthier choices in deprived areas is to blame...

I've been there many times. I try to set an alarm for the day it's due for a change. Or, failing that, if I end up having to do it in the night or whatever, try not to get too grumpy about it, as that serves no-one.
