We're looking forward to kicking off our home visits to test for coal dust in Newport News this weekend. We want to make sure we're coming correct so we're starting with some practice rounds!

There's still time to sign up to have your home tested for coal dust! Do it at coaldustkills.com

Got Dust? We Want to Test It!
We’re researching the impact of coal dust in Southeast Newport News and Lambert’s Point to push for changes that will cut down on coal pollution— and we need your help!

2 Ways to Get Involved:

We swiped the sides of houses in Hampton Roads with EPA standard wipes earlier this fall. Now, the dust is being tested.

Sometimes politicians and industry executives claim it's not coal dust but highway exhaust that makes the dust. Soon we'll know for sure.

Based on these maps, does it seem like the sensors would detect airborne coal dust?

Here is the wind pattern around the coal terminals and sensors (yellow arrows):

Who regulates coal dust?

The EPA has regulations for dust that includes coal dust. To maintain those standards, they compare the amount of dust measured by sensors. Those sensors are sited regionally. Here are the sensors for the Hampton Roads region (red circles):

So… if a mountain of coal moved through the Lambert’s Point terminal in a month… what about where that mountain used to be?

Our monitors form a dense network that report how much dust is in the air immediately. A new presidential administration won’t affect our monitors’ ability to tell how much dust is in the air.
November 19, 2024 at 4:13 PM
The monitors in Newport News and Lambert’s Point collect particles from the air. They use a technology called light scattering-based sensors to determine how much of each size of particle is in that sample. That info is uploaded instantly onto our interactive map: app.quant-aq.com/s/8PFU6TPHV8...
November 18, 2024 at 3:38 PM
And we’d explain we’re the Repair Lab and we’re installing air monitors to measure the coal dust.
November 14, 2024 at 8:53 PM
Because coal dust doesn’t stay in the atmosphere long, it affects places differently at different times. We decided where the monitors went based on community input - people telling us where the coal dust was worst. See the distribution on our interactive map: app.quant-aq.com/s/FFTYOVPT40....

November 13, 2024 at 8:38 PM
This probably won’t change with a new head of EPA, or a new president. And that’s why the monitors that we are installing are important.
November 13, 2024 at 8:38 PM
How will a new president affect coal dust? The EPA monitors air quality in Hampton Roads as a region. The regional air monitor for Hampton Roads are sometimes dozens of miles away from communities affected by coal dust -- already unlikely to show evidence of coal dust affecting people’s lives.

We are so excited and honored to have these new air sensors up in 12 locations in Southeast Community and 6 locations in Lambert’s Point. You can see the information they are collecting with live updates here:
