Some residents of East End won’t open their windows even on hot days to avoid the coal dust carried by wind. It’s not just unpleasant – it’s dangerous in a neighborhood with a dangerously high heat index.

People who have lived in East End for a long time are familiar with the sight: fine black dust coating window blinds, even after they’ve just been cleaned.

We're collecting all the data, interviews, photos, research and meeting notes we've generated in the past two years into a coal dust wiki. Will go live in the first part of 2025. ( :<

We swiped the sides of houses in Hampton Roads with EPA standard wipes earlier this fall. Now, the dust is being tested.

Sometimes politicians and industry executives claim it's not coal dust but highway exhaust that makes the dust. Soon we'll know for sure.

Who regulates coal dust?

The EPA has regulations for dust that includes coal dust. To maintain those standards, they compare the amount of dust measured by sensors. Those sensors are sited regionally. Here are the sensors for the Hampton Roads region (red circles):

How much coal moves through Lambert's Point Terminal?

1.11 million tons in September of this year.

Imagine a cube measuring almost one football field on each side. Now imagine it full of coal. A mountain, essentially. In just one month.

The EPA's regional air monitor for Hampton Roads are miles away from communities affected by coal dust -- unlikely to show evidence of coal dust affecting people’s lives. This likely won’t change with a new EPA, or a new president. And that’s why the monitors that we are installing are important.
November 19, 2024 at 4:13 PM
How do the monitors work? First, you have to know that there are different sizes of particles in the air. We want to measure all of the different sizes of particles to make sure we’re measuring coal dust.

Just found these 'behind the scenes' documentaries about coal operations in Hampton Roads, VA. Even after producing 5+ hours of documentary podcast (Crosswinds) on coal dust in Hampton Roads, I am learning so much.

Because coal dust doesn’t stay in the atmosphere long, it affects places differently at different times. We decided where the monitors went based on community input - people telling us where the coal dust was worst. See the distribution on our interactive map: app.quant-aq.com/s/FFTYOVPT40....

How will a new president affect coal dust? The EPA monitors air quality in Hampton Roads as a region. The regional air monitor for Hampton Roads are sometimes dozens of miles away from communities affected by coal dust -- already unlikely to show evidence of coal dust affecting people’s lives.

We are so excited and honored to have these new air sensors up in 12 locations in Southeast Community and 6 locations in Lambert’s Point. You can see the information they are collecting with live updates here:
