Martha Ester Mitchell was born #otd in Philadelphia, 1899. She worked as a nurse for a dentist before she arrived in Spain after she received her passport on March 24, 1937. She served with AMB and assisted with dental surgeries until she returned to the US by November 8, 1937.

Salaria Kea was born #otd in Milledgeville, 1913. She sailed for Spain on March 27, 1937 and was the only African American nurse. She served at Villa Paz until she returned to the US on May 16, 1938. She served in WWII and helped integrate NYC hospitals as a nurse before she retired to Akron.

Arthur Munday was born #otd in NYC, 1915. A photographer, he joined the CPUSA in 1935 and arrived in Spain on February 21, 1937. He was WIA five times before he returned to the US on December 15, 1938. He liberated Mauthausen during WWII and later worked as a dress maker, designer and boat captain.

Clyde Donald Taylor was born #otd in Barthell, 1915. He attended the radical Commonwealth College and joined the CPUSA in 1935. He worked as a chemist before he sailed for Spain on May Day 1937. He served with ALB and the Mac Paps until he was KIA on January 12, 1938 at Teruel.

John Rody was born #otd in Pittsburgh, 1916. He visited the USSR in 1930 and joined the YCL in 1932. He worked as a sailor and arrived in Spain on May 25, 1937. He served with ALB as a medic and mechanic until he returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He married Eleanor Nelson on March 8, 1941.

William Baker Kwanaekoa was born #otd in Honolulu, 1909. He served in the Coast Guard before he worked as a deep sea diver, sailor, and Teamsters truck driver. He arrived in Spain on August 19, 1937 and was WIA in the jaw at Brunete. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Israel Lazarovitz was born #otd in Chişinău, 1902. He arrived in the US in 1921 and joined the CPUSA in 1922. He changed his name to William Lazar before he served as a commissar in the fall of 1937. His daughter, Jane Lazarre published, The Communist and the Communist’s Daughter: A Memoir in 2017.

Robert Reed was born #otd in TX, 1914. An organizer with the CPUSA, STFU and UAW, he arrived in Spain on May 30, 1937 after he survived the sinking of the MV Ciudad de Barcelona. He returned to the US on December 15, 1938 and was a social worker in WA. He researched SCW veterans from the Pacific NW.

Curtis Kurt Erich Craig was born #otd in Germany, 1907. He worked as a sailor and arrived in Spain on October 8, 1937. He served with ALB until he returned to the US on October 25, 1938. He remained a sailor for over 40 years. He captained a bluefin fishing boat before he passed on October 31, 1970.
