I lived two years in Armenia, and no one there could agree on whether it is a European or Asian nation. I live in Pittsburgh now, and no one can agree on whether it is in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, or Northeast. I’m French-Canadian, which, in many ways, makes me neither French nor Canadian.
Armenian-American here. When I applied for school the closest category I had to what I was fell under "White/West European", and while Armenia IS in West Asia, I feel like marking "Asian" would get me the same flak Mamdani is seeing now.
The Mamdani Columbia story is an example of a microgenre where ethnic communities have had complex internal conversations about identity for generations and white people pratfall into them to go "what the fuck, why are you trying to trick me"
