I feel inspired!
Hi, all! As the year comes to a close, I have been thinking about how far we have come together. 2025 has been a year of building, listening, and preparing for what comes next. From powerful conversations at our Freshwater Luncheon to finalizing the Cleveland Environmental Policy Platform, our team and partners have kept the focus on equity, collaboration, and results. Cleveland continues to show that environmental progress happens when community and policy move hand in hand. I am proud of what we have accomplished and grateful to everyone who made it possible. There's this table in the introduction to the book. I'm very curious to read on here what "option for change" as laid out in the table this "Our CPP" and your other efforts to make "big change" in Cleveland are pursuing?

Direct democracy is only as liberating as the values that animate it. Without liberatory politics, a popular assembly will be reduced to merely a decision-making structure. That said, if we as organizers center our ideology at the expense of mass participation by a broad section of ordinary people, then the assembly will be little more than an echo-chamber for activists, rather than a vehicle for collective transformation and governance. I am open to supporting the continued use of ShotSpotter, but I would need clear, data-backed local justification for its continued use. I also have concerns about cost-efficiency and where to allocate our tight budget, especially as federal funding streams for public safety dry up. Our limited funds have to go to the most impactful safety interventions.

“Stakeholder democracy,” however, signals a concerning rethinking of democratic engagement and participation, distinct from the commitments that guide democratic theory’s commitments to participation and action (Barber Reference Barber1984; Fung and Wright Reference Fung and Wright2003; Pateman Reference Pateman1970; Wolin Reference Wolin2018). Grounded in the logic of systems thinking, institutional engagement with and participation from stakeholders are cultivated not to arrive at the articulation of common values but to manage complexity. Rather than members of the public coming together to collectively confront different political visions and transactionally arriving at novel positions, circumscribed engagement among affected parties is staged for long-term institutional survival. Participation, as such, is not severed from political institutions but, under conditions of complexity, tied to only those interests that are affected by a problem and channeled for the perpetuation of political order.
