probably because they feel very out-of-control over their own lives so they want to exercise their power over someone they perceive as lesser (e.g. someone who can't fight back) as a way of feeling in control. it's very childish so i always treat people like that as if they are upset children. works

no online friend breakups we just fade into the distance of each others' timelines until one of us unfollows
