Interesting way that CT’s Green Bank is loaning funds to help schools go solar. These types of investments save taxpayers in the long run, but it’s hard for schools to find the upfront capital. Maybe it’s time for a MD Green Bank?

Did you see that Ellen Ochoa Middle School received the 2025 AIA Maryland Public Building of the Year award?

The school is LEED Gold, has geothermal heating/cooling, and has solar, making it net zero, consuming as much energy as it produces.

Comptroller @brookelierman.bsky.social has a new report finding 80% of MD schools need renovation or replacement. It’s a great opportunity to make sure new or renovated schools are efficient, solar, and have geothermal to save on long term operation costs.

Unfortunately, because of HR 1, the race is on to move on #CleanEnergy projects in our kids’ schools. Access to clean, cheap energy is something our kids deserve, but they do need help with the up front costs.

Unfortunately, new research out shows the increasing physical and mental health burdens our children will experience as climate change continues to worsen. We must act now so things doesn’t get worst for our children and theirs.

Did you see the good news? PGCPS was awarded $2.5 million dollars by the @mdenergy.bsky.social! More of our kids will have healthier rides to school and PGCPS will save on fuel costs because of this investment.

We need to make sure that Interim Superintendent Joseph is aware of the PGCPS’s leadership on school climate action, that students and parents care, and that there are financial benefits to this work by attending one of his upcoming listening sessions.

PGCPS is stepping up their game with solar on schools. They have an RFI out to move to installing solar on potentially up to 60 schools. This would lead to cost savings and and a cleaner school system.

We are still catching up on all of the stories @canarymedia.com did as part of the Powering Rural Futures series. It’s an example closer to home of recent HS grads entering solar apprenticeships. This is a model we should look, especially for students in CTE.
