I think any of us who studied extreme heat also understood that extreme cold was a huge driver of mortality. Whether it be AC/HVAC/Heating Systems, we have the tech to protect vulnerable populations but still allow an economic injustice to harm people - programs like LIHEAP helped, now...
When home heating is less affordable, more people die each winter. That's what our analysis found for a period when LIHEAP was in place. Without LIHEAP, the effect would presumably much larger.

This is, in large part, pandemic revenge.

As far as these oligarchs are concerned, all science does is tell them stuff they cannot do.

They can't keep spewing carbon.

They can't keep businesses open as usual when millions are dying.

They have concluded that research is the enemy of profit.
Absolute BLOODBATH at HHS/NIH/CDC this morning. Generation of scientists, health care officials being wiped out

My colleague @askellyphd.bsky.social just published this great paper and while they focused on COVID-19 you could easily substitute it for #ClimateChange impacts to public health and come to similar conclusions - great insight into public health systems and gov response

Great write-up - more of these stories are needed. It is the Bay Area but also communities across the US. These grants were to help the most disadvantaged clean up pollution and protect their environment so they could have clean air and clean water - just like every American should.

After weeks of the Trump Administration trying and failing to find evidence of wrongdoing in the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, these funds remain illegally frozen.

Just another example of Trump and Musk trying to steal funding allocated by Congress to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.
EPA freezing green groups' bank accounts "strikingly illegal," prof says
The Trump administration wants to claw back $20 billion in climate funding authorized by Congress. But the agency has shown no evidence of any wrongdoing.

I’m optimistic when I see bills like the one from Rep Underwood - ‘Climate and Health Protection Act’ that codifies climate & health into the Public Health Service Act - very much needed (but may not get far in this Congress) - I think it’s the 3rd time, it’ll stick eventually- keeping hope alive! 😄

It's even dumber than you think, and yet Trump's DOJ is playing along.

As record snowfall blankets the US this week, it’s a good time to remember that (a) winter is the season that is warming fastest and (b) warmer air holds more water vapor – which means more water vapor for storms to sweep up and dump as rain, or snow!
