A pre-COP event will be hosted by a Pacific Island nation, and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will lead negotiations in Antalya.

The Albanese Government had been locked in a long stand-off with Türkiye over hosting, with the official rules requiring global consensus on a host.

From fires to floods, heatwaves to rising sea levels, different countries will all be impacted in different ways, but the underlying cause remains the same: climate change.

This climate disaster is yet another reminder of why we must urgently reduce climate pollution, and better prepare communities for worsening disasters in a supercharged climate.

"Investors would think twice before bringing their money [to Australia] because the policy settings could well change dramatically at the next election," said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie on ABC radio this morning.

“When climate disasters decimate the lives of millions, when we already have the solutions, this will never, ever be forgiven," says Simon Stiell.

With Australia bidding to co-host next year's COP31 with Pacific nations, we'll be paying close attention to how this summit plays out, and how Australia might make the most of an opportunity to demonstrate climate leadership on the world stage.
