Three pottery wheels inside a pottery I built 2½ years ago, in front of a black utility shelving unit on which 50 lb boxes of bagged clay are now stored. A few partial bags sit on the floor to the right, waiting to be heaved up top of the shelves Yellow utility shelving unit at the front of the pottery, on which buckets of glaze are now stored Four kilo bowls thrown from Troy porcelain this afternoon. I make around 200 pots over the cold months. Come late spring I'll fire them in my combo anagama/noborigama wood kiln for 3½ days, along with another 300 or so pots thrown or hand built by other potters

A circular stack of firewood known as a holzhausen. It's composed of freshly cut and split hardwood, mostly oak and maple A cord of wood is 4'x4'x8', or 128cu.ft. The cylindrical part of the stack is 7' across and 5' high and the volume of a cylinder=π•r²•h, so: 3.14x3.5²x5=192cu.ft., or 1½ cords. So about 1⅔ cords I figure, counting the roof The wood under roof in the back of the holzhausen is drier, and will be ready by spring. Probably burn six or seven of the nine cords stored there next May

A hollow, half-built circular woodpile--a holzhausen, or beehive stack--made from split logs of oak, maple, black cherry and a little yellow and paper birch, sitting on top of wooden pallets and concrete blocks. Currently about four feet high. The inside will be filled with wood, and the outer wall will move inward, like the top of a beehive, from this point on. Final dimensions will be some seven feet in diameter and the same in height The inside of the holzhausen, to be filled with more split hardwood Split wood under roof for next year's firings. Two nice hens at the base of an ancient fallen red oak. I found them five days before harvesting them, when they were still quite small, and hid them under a very large piece of bark that had already peeled off the trunk--not to keep them out of the pieholes of other foragers, but to keep them from being munched by deer Two kilos of cleaned hens in a large porcelain bowl. It didn't take long to process them, as I got to the mushies before the roly-poly bugs That's not to say there weren't other smol critters needing encouragement to find new homes Cooked mushroom pickles in a large pot--enough for gifting once canned and to last my wife and me through the year I used forager chef Alan Bergo's recipe, to which I added cilantro and various hot peppers for more of a kick Pepper varieties visible in the photo: red and yellow Ho Chi Minhs, a green serrano, and the only ghost pepper I managed to grow this year, having planted a little late
