Then the chapter went on to provide a self enclosed "plot unit" as you would probably call it. Then introduced an unrelated bit with an unanswered question at the end. I ended up thinking of it similar to the television dramas where the episodes are self enclosed units.

One of my favorite books, Perdido Street Station, had an interesting chapter structure that split the difference on this. Almost every chapter started with a bit that answered a plot bit introduced at the end of the last chapter.
