7th January is St. Distaff’s Day, named after the tradition of women taking up their distaffs (a spinning tool) to resume work after the Christmas holiday. Euonymus europaeus is the “spindle-tree” because its wood was sometimes used to make spindles or distaffs. #FairytaleTuesday

Back from new year break & so sorry to learn of death of Dame Ros Savile, former Director of Wallace Collection. She was a porcelain expert and I did old books, but she was unbelievably kind & helpful to me when I was Libraries Curator at the National Trust. RIP. www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

“All nature has a feeling: woods, fields, brooks
Are life eternal: and in silence they
Speak happiness beyond the reach of books;
There's nothing mortal in them; their decay
Is the green life of change; to pass away
And come again in blooms revivified.”
