I work in environmental policy and being emersed in the detail means i actually see a lot of the good news and when i look at mainstream news its ONLY bad stuff but i promise there's even more good news that is just hard to explain and kinda boring but i am so optimistic!! We can do it guys!!

I think that's very fair!! It has a lot of the book in a 'literal' way (so many other adaptations cut the north pole stuff or the monster with the blind family, or even the first person narrative elements) but still manages to have a very different perspective on them which was interesting for me

Interesting! I can get that -I think the lingering on the father relationship early on adds to that. I found in a way that reminded me of how feminist a novel it is, because it's a lot about passing on masculinity through parenting via force (when the monster says 'you only listen when i hurt you'!)

A man who understands how to deliver on the promise of melodrama!!! Like at no point did it feel like it was self-conscious or pulling the punch on committing to the melodrama and story. Fully committed. So good.

I liked Zeb and Gideon but I think only getting Zeb's pov means we don't connect with Gideon as much. I don't love the structure that makes all the relationship building come in backstory, the reader has to accept a lot of exposition which doesn't vibe with me as much. But still very fun!
