The Mann Gulch fire began raging uphill toward the fighters. Foreman Dodge lit a backfire, telling his crew to drop their tools & follow him into his "escape fire." 13 didn't hear or follow and died. Though not unscathed, Dodge survived.

36 years ago I had two married grad student housemates from Beijing. We watched the Tianamen Square protests for democracy with wrapt attention as protesteres chanted confidently: "You are the Peoples Liberation Amy and we are the people." For a time it seemed that bond would not break.
