there are a bunch of potential candidates (Troy Jackson was my hope), but they all want to run for Governor for some reason. Jordan Wood is currently the frontrunner but it's crazy early (and he's relatively unknown)

I think there was a definite need to consolidate design resources between macOS, iOS, etc (there were definitely some bits that were diverging), and I think Apple took the opportunity to add some new design bells and whistles while they did so.
