I came over here a little more than a year ago, and promptly forgot about it. But now I suppose I'm back. Looking to follow accounts related to higher ed, Buddhist studies, and surviving the general mess that we're in right now.

Spent my thanksgiving weekend watching the David Beckham docuseries on Netflix. TIL that he has his wife’s name — transliterated into Devanagari — tattooed on his arm. It reads व्हिक्टोरिया. I feel like this could’ve been spelled better in so many different ways.

A good 20% of my day yesterday involved this kind of labor.
You really have no idea how much we (lady) professors serve as mental health pit stops for our students. It is so damn exhausting- far worse for my black and Indigenous and openly LGBTQ+ colleagues. I am not qualified for that part of my job 😬

I'm preparing to talk to some music students in a class called "How to Practice." Intended to bring in Śāntideva's writing on diligence, focusing on his definition of diligence as practice that's done joyfully. But now I'm re-reading chapter 7 of the Bodhicaryavatara, and man... this book is weird.

Today was the kind of day in the classroom that makes my heart full: I walked into class and everyone was already in a heated discussion about the reading. I offered students a break halfway through class, and they refused to leave. Everyone was engaged, and we all learned something from one another

The US government is facing another shutdown. This is concerning for a lot of reasons, but selfishly, I'm peeved because I'm about to submit an NEH grant application, and if the government shuts down, nobody is going to be there to read it.

40% of the faculty have resigned since this nonsense began. I suspect that most of those who are sticking around are doing so because they can't afford to walk away. What's most disgusting about all of this is the fact that students are caught in the middle.

Question for folks in Higher Ed: What are some words/phrases that we can use to talk about the humanities other than "humanities," "arts & sciences," or "liberal arts"? I.e., what are some words we can use to talk about the humanities to regular folks outside of the academy?
