Civil War Naval historian examining Confederate ironclad construction and the Federal Blockade off Charleston Harbor. Philly sports fan, PhD, Associate Professor at a community college. Also: metal, foodways. Views are my own, not my employers, etc.

On May 26, 2016, my family stumbled into a Papal Procession and Benediction on the way back from dinner in Rome. This was given by Pope Francis for the Feast of Corpus Christi at Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, an absolutely special opportunity for all of us.

A moment of Zen amidst all the chaos: our new foster cat, Lilly, a five-month kitten. She has trouble with her vision and hearing, but she is a happy kitten. We are glad to be caring for her right now.

1130 am continuation: The attached picture is a 19th century depiction of the Palmetto State, from the Naval History and Heritage Command. The picture highlights the armored casemate shield of the Confederate ironclad, its signature design element as compared to the turret onboard the Monitors.

One of the more underrated markets in the Philly area: the Lancaster County Farmers market in Wayne. I also grabbed for lunch from the nearby Tredici Italian Market their porcetta sandwich with spinach and long hots. It was great! Also, the peppers cleared out my sinuses, which was needed.
