Teaching at a Title 1 school isn’t a sympathy badge. Our Black & brown students deserve to be seen for their brilliance, not as charity cases. Let’s honor them with dignity, not pity. #clearthelist with integrity.

Students start on the 25th, but some of mine were in the building this week to pick up their schedules and help the incoming 6th graders with their orientation.
So of course one popped into my office and asked “Got any food?”
Really need to make that Costco run before school starts…

Today in #schoolcounselor I spent 12 hours straight working on schedules. Just fixing all the mistakes that the helpful preloading done via computer had utterly messed up.
Still so very much to do…

I am a super anxious flyer, and turbulence is worse than ever. Thankfully my technique of eating Sour Patch Kids, doing some color-by-number coloring, and listening to favorite episodes of @threebeansaladpod.bsky.social is helping immensely.
Still anxious but not panicking.

My 16 year old: Okay, wait. Internet thing. Have you seen that thing with that one guy from Murder on the Orient Express who’s in that new rom-com with that one girl?

Me: Okay, stop and don’t give me anymore information. I really want to figure it out just from this.

Five years ago I had a tough school year as a TA, and then Covid hit. One of my students moved away mid-lockdown. She sent me emails of her artwork and stories for a while before they faded away.
Her mom emailed me last week to say they live here again, and the student wanted to see me.

One of my favorite things this summer has been pretending I’m on vacation in my own city.
Leaving the house in the morning, taking a walk, going to a cafe. Perfect.

Oh look, my Assyriologist husband’s exact pet peeve
Hello, I’m a historian in a film. I can instantly decode ancient Near Eastern scripts, and am fluent in 23 dead languages, yet my primary field is 16th century European portraiture
Hello, I'm a historian in a film. My office is a massive space filled with Persian rugs, leather couches and massive wooden bookcases. There's a Tiffany lamp on my desk and an original Gutenberg Bible on a stand next to it. I am wearing a tweed suit with five layers.

Went disc golfing with friends yesterday and had a weird premonition that my assistant principal would call me. I think maybe because when we went disc golfing last year I was waiting for a call from him to find out if I had gotten a job there?
Anyway. My phone rang. It was him. So very strange.

Reading is quite literally my favorite thing to do.
I’ve read over 100 books this year, all in print, because I don’t do well with audiobooks.
BUT. I have been rereading @gregjenner.bsky.social’s Dead Famous via his narrating the audiobook, and it is a delight via that medium and *such* a good book.

I love when my kids’ personalities shine so differently.
The 16 year old got an electric bass this summer.
The 12 year old got a lyre.

For the first time?!
Why, for the first time, do I not feel in a celebratory mood today?

Absolutely baffled and livid that JP what’s his face couldn’t be bothered to learn how to pronounce these players’ names. So I’m not learning his last name.

It’s the 50th anniversary of Jaws today. My husband loves the movie and has been trying to get our kids to watch it for years saying things like “I have an idea for a movie! There’s this sea adventure where they go fishing” until the kids realize he’s suggesting Jaws yet again.

I’ve decided to start many mornings this summer the way I do when I’m traveling: walking to a cafe.
Today, I drove with my husband to his strength training and then walked through a park to get downtown and try out MK Cannelle. They had my absolute favorite: pain aux raisin!

Happy Pride, everyone!
Started our annual Pride At Home a day early and found Pride shoes when shoe shopping for my son today, so obviously I got new shoes too.

Two weeks left of the school year.
My vasculitis is back causing constant pain in my eye and kidney issues.
I suddenly have plantar fasciitis.
And my students are so very done.
This school counselor and mom is very very tired.

Parenting teenagers is so fun and funny. Of course there are harder parts too, I’m not here for toxic positivity. But the fun part is really great.

Responded to a text from my husband with simply “okay.”
He texted to ask if everything was okay. I said “Yeah why?”
and he said “I don’t think you’ve ever just replied ‘okay’ to anything.”
Hahahaha so true.
So he got my typical wordiness in a reply explaining why I went with just “okay”

Teenager with an awful case of mono meant a night spent in the hospital last night.
My vasculitis is flaring with scleritis back in my eye.
It’s been a bad medical run this weekend over here, alas.

Two teachers threw me under the bus in our staff meeting for talking to a student when he leaves their room (extremely escalated) and comes to me.
I know for a fact they don’t want him when he’s in that state, because they kick him out. So…what do you want the counselor to do exactly?

Going into classrooms for the full hour 16 times this week and next. Four today, and I’m exhausted. There are a lot of reasons I’m a counselor and not a teacher, but this is definitely one of them! Shoutout to all the teachers out there who do this even more every day.

My middle school has 3 self-contained classrooms. I’m in my first year as counselor and finally getting to my goal of collaborating with the teachers to best support their students as counselor. They told me that no other counselor has done that.
Unacceptable and shouldn’t have taken me this long.

Cory Booker beating that racist man’s record while talking about John Lewis.
Let’s go.
