Brings to mind the words of Capt Hugh Irish (13th N.J. Inf.) when asked by his wife what would happen to their two boys if he didn’t return: it would be better for the boys to be without a father than to be without a govt under which to live. He was killed at Antietam.

His sister Annie unveiled the monument at the 1904 ceremony. A veteran of the regiment said the monument would “remain where it now stands, to teach the lesson of patriotism to future generations, and to show relatives and friends where we fought for the Union.” 3/
