His sister Annie unveiled the monument at the 1904 ceremony. A veteran of the regiment said the monument would “remain where it now stands, to teach the lesson of patriotism to future generations, and to show relatives and friends where we fought for the Union.” 3/

The CSA brigade of Col. Edward L. Thomas, himself an enslaver of at least eight persons according to the 1860 census, processed prisoners, arms and supplies, and put the refugees back into slavery. Thomas and other Confederates omitted mention of this re-enslavement in their official reports. 3/
