Drawn to interesting minds, succinct summaries and a good pie chart. Hate social media, think it's making us dumb and depressed, but I'm still on it - Getting dumber and more depressed.
None there I gather. The state turned down a plan to install them several years ago.

look at that scary gang member in the flannel shirt - he's clearly a wrongun. The UK has "policing by consent" - I assumed the US did but clearly not if you can mount up and bash anyone in a public park in the middle of the day. They have resources and force, why aren't they going after the gangs?

My pink sheets would like to raise a point of order.

So the local Mayor and California doesn't have authority over it's own police forces? Anyone understand how LAPD and HBPD are able to just join in on these stunts against the wishes of the city and state administration?
July 8, 2025 at 5:00 AM
Thanks for this - I was confused how ICE suddenly had mounted officers. It was obviously a PR stunt but I don't understand how ICE has the authority to bring in local police departments clearly against the wishes of the local Mayor and politicians. So LAPD, HBPD etc aren't under Californian control?
July 8, 2025 at 4:57 AM
ok, possibly odd question, but why do ICE have mounted officers?

yes, it would be interesting to know what the alert said. How clear was it.
July 7, 2025 at 7:14 PM
I imagine the camp owners, councilors etc are going to blame themselves but the real failure is the state decision not to have a warning system in an area known for these risks. But given the death toll is similar to about three school shootings, I fear nothing much will change.
July 7, 2025 at 11:25 AM
yes, and emergency warning texts for immediate evac would require mobiles to be on, in coverage and heard. I gather it was a tech free camp so kids probably didn't have theirs, did the camp adults? Would they have even heard them if they're fast asleep. Totally inadequate warning system.
July 7, 2025 at 11:13 AM
And a completely inadequate warning system. Some warnings the day before but emergency approach was texts to all phones in the evac area which was in the middle of the night. Phone's needed to be on, with coverage and heard. Supposedly Texas turned down a river tannoy warning system some years ago.
July 7, 2025 at 11:10 AM
I'd read there were warnings but funding cuts meant the data wasn't accurate, the warnings were late and the original forecasts were out on river height. And presumably admin of the camp would have tech to receive alerts, contact from parents, deal with emergencies etc?

You have to wonder at the parents that could produce such a soulless creature.

I still can't see the US voting for a female candidate but i would sure love to see AOC in the presidential debates.

Starmer has lost his way. He may think the left of centre middle class voter are a shoe-in, but if he continues to court tories and reform, he will lose voters to the Greens and Lib Dems. And he'll never get Tory and Reform votes whatever he does.

Unfortunately we seem to have a weak leader being steered by an adviser who is not as clever as he thinks. Morgan McSweeney helped Labour with their big election win, and it now seems he is followed blindly. The right advice would have been to say nothing.

Dear Senator, why would the military follow the order without Congress sign off?
June 22, 2025 at 6:30 AM
Didn't US intelligence confirm that the nuclear threat wasn't currently there? How can the president order such major escalation without signoff from congress / the senate? It's terrifying that the US military undertakes an order like this from one man. I can't understand it.
June 22, 2025 at 6:27 AM
but the damage has already been done and that was the point. If international students have a choice, they won't choose a US university at risk the rules suddenly change. The Admin never needed to win, they just needed to erode trust.

It's giving off bored Gen Z vibes - warning, next level is ghosting, don't push it.

Bear Auntie is one stern "hey" away from becoming the central character in the "she loved those bears more than anything and we can't believe it turned on her..." story. Maybe even a Netflix series.
June 18, 2025 at 4:35 PM
Without identification or a warrant, why should members of the public believe these are federal officers or law enforcement? Surely this is the counterpoint.
