When Dana refers to him as a "gameshow host" that line was originally a "used car salesman" because the character is, in fact, a sleazy person. They changed it because Murray made Peter inherently more charming and it hit better. But he was still a creep at heart.

What makes this first film so great is that at its center (because of Ackroyd) it is a sci-fi/horror movie which really works. That they wrap it up in comedy packaging gives it the heart and accessibility that made it a certified blockbuster and franchise tent pole.

This. Just because you root for him, doesn't mean he wasn't absolutely supposed to come off as sleazy.

Books are a perfect blend of Le Carre and Fleming. Then the show is perfectly cast. Both just great fun.

If only the public perception, like with most psychological conditions, wasn't stigmatization, like a deformity, but rather associated with something with concrete physical symptoms like asthma, both of which can be severe but have varying degrees of treatment.
