In good news, I got this book just in time to bring to Shoup’s memorial service at UCLA tomorrow. Very special that he got to read & edit these essays in tribute to his work before he passed away last year. 🥹

Proud to see Bar Harbor, ME embracing paid parking management the last few years.

Its proximity to Acadia National Park, harbor for cruise ships, and dense downtown has always made it a popular tourist destination.

Last year seasonal parking made $4M for local projects. 🤝

You love to see it!

New housing coming to my neighborhood. ❤️
Lots of businesses have closed in the past couple years and it’s nice to see this building to use the whole space for housing.

Currently at a Habitat home dedication on Capitol Hill. Like most homes on the block, there is no off-street parking.

Thanks to SB 5184, this choice to maximize housing for people instead of cars, will be legal in cities across WA.

Welcome home 🏠 #waleg

Still absurd that this homeless service center in Everett had to move because they were a few blocks inside an arbitrary boundary.

Glad they found a new spot but what a headache.

My favorite housing project since Oregon widely eliminated parking mandates is officially complete!

✅4 new backyard homes
✅1 bed/1 bath + unfinished 2nd floor
✅No demolition or displacement
✅$96,000(!) to qualified buyers

Legalize it far and wide 📢

I assumed this article was about zoning, because that is the most common legal tool used to block projects people in power don't like.

The zoning code in Selah, WA requires 2x as many parking spaces for mosques as any other religious building. This is totally legal and many people approved it. 😵‍💫

One of the arguments against parking reform is that people are afraid builders will actually use the flexibility to build more homes.

Yes. That's exactly what we're hoping for.

I’m headed to Seattle for a few months and still looking for someone to take my desk & keep @andersem.bsky.social company. $125/month, a few blocks from Powells.

Empty office spaces abound, but only one has such a delightful coworker in it!

The model assumed new housing would have
-0.5 parking spots/home near transit
-1 parking space/home everywhere else

Without being constrained by excessive parking ratios, multifamily buildings can provide more homes per project, and be more financially viable. No other zoning reforms needed. 🥳

Sandy, OR relaxed parking mandates for daycares after learning about their own childcare shortage and ~surprise~ within a few years the city has 50+ more daycare spots as a direct result of that zoning change, with more on the way.

Any city can make the choice to prioritize kids over cars. fin/

People like Dana want to open more daycares, but even sites this large can't accommodate excessive parking mandates.

Clark County, WA required 32 spaces, the architect managed to squeeze 29, but that was enough to cancel the whole project. 2/
