Rick Steves is an American treasure. Just all-around, one of the absolute best of us.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

You ban gender affirming care, people will just get it from an online source.

It's the same policy result as the failed war on drugs.

The Internet is already dead.... I got to talk to a number of queer and/or punk young people (teens and 20s) who are fairly prodigious makers of media stuff, all print and music, are clever with phones and computers, but don't put their stuff on the net.

Not only has it become difficult and […]

How do politicians, who have the power to do something, live with themselves reading stories like this? People are getting amputations from frostbite because they live on the street in the dark of winter and provincial, municipal, federal governments say nothing, do nothing.

What kind of […]

Vancouver and Victoria people: I'll be there in January and I might as well give some more lectures than I'm already committed to. Anybody have a library or science centre connection and want me to give a public talk about space debris and satellite pollution?

This is brilliant. But eventually it's going to get noticed by the "AI" companies and added to some sort of list of things to optimize for. And we have to keep in mind that a lot of "AI" appearing to work is really you asking it for something that was a previously discovered failure. Each time […]

anyway, this is why my main criticism of snap is that there are any restrictions on it at all. I think they should just give people money.
study after study after study shows that literally just handing people money and telling them "do what you want with this" reduces homelessness, increases food security for children, makes it more likely people will find and retain jobs.1
