china has i think like 5/10 of the deadliest wars in history and all of them are fascinating, particularly the taiping rebellion. it had a dead toll that nearly eclipses world war i in scale.
also, world war i. a lot of focus gets put on wwii, but wwi is way more complicated and interesting imo.

Sharp Objects is definitely a book where you’re not necessarily meant to like the protagonist, just understand and sympathize with her. I do get how that can be offputting, though.
