Lacking the bangers of the first instalment, John M. Chu’s fantasy musical sequel Wicked: For Good wraps the Oz adaptation with moments of magic but the stylistic ‘darkness’ results in dullness, looking like it’s being watched through smudged glasses.

I know and care about as much about The Boss now as I did before going into Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. A handful of good performances but a dour, uninteresting drama that’s lacking in story. Feels like it’s been fed through a music biopic AI generator.

Love that Cianfrance has delivered Pines’ goofy cousin with Roofman!

With dirt under his fingernails and sadness in his soul, Mike shifts from one desperate situation to the next in social-surrealist drama Urchin, an inventive portrait of contemporary British homelessness. Dillane is magnetic. Dickinson is a directorial voice to be reckoned with.

Social media engagement may be WAY down because of Musk’s hellscape etc. but the stats at Cinema Perspective are thriving. Beat 2024’s views already to show strong year-on-year improvement. Film criticism is alive 🙌

Far less deep and thought-provoking than Aronofsky’s earlier oeuvre, crime thriller Caught Stealing gets a LOT out of Austin Butler’s charm and big screen magnetism. Not sure the comedic style withstands the dark plot beats, but it’s a compelling ride through grimy New York City.

Brilliant World Cup idea. I got a selfie with a giraffe last year in Kenya. Not the best one of me but a great one of him 🦒

Flying by at just 85 minutes & firing out gags of all kinds at a rate of knots, Akiva Schaffer’s spoof requel The Naked Gun is very silly but totally self-aware with it, marking a worthy comeback for the beloved franchise! Liam Neeson & Pamela Anderson make a great duo.

Bringing grief, terror, & teeth to the table, Aussie twins Danny & Michael Philippou contextualise shocking body horror within a textured story that boasts a truly unnerving turn from Sally Hawkins. One of the most disturbing cinema experiences I’ve ever had #BringHerBack

Loved the small-scale intimacy of John Maclean's samurai western Tornado which pays passionate homage to genre cinema. Beautifully shot in the outskirts of Edinburgh with heaps of tension and intrigue in its bleak, minimalistic style. Darkly funny in moments too. Kōki is a star!

In its best moments, Joseph Kosinski’s racing thriller F1 is an exhilarating cinematic spectacle but off the tracks, the script is in the pits with clunky, soap opera storytelling. If you loved Top Gun: Maverick, the team behind it have struck again.

Had a wee walk around Lake Minnewaska yesterday to explore where the brilliant Woe’s Hollow episode of Severance was filmed!

Marvel gets the ‘better help’ treatment with latest instalment #Thunderbolts*, an anti-hero tale that keenly deals in loneliness, shame & depression through its ensemble of outcasts. It should come as no surprise that co-writer Calo is best known for her work on Bojack Horseman.

A wholesome camping trip in the Catskill mountains becomes fraught with tension in coming-of-age indie Good One, a slight yet superb directorial debut from India Donaldson. Stunningly shot and quietly devastating as a father-daughter bond is changed forever.

A thrilling and stylish Southern Gothic fusion of blues & bloodsuckers, Ryan Coogler masterfully weaves themes of love, lust, and legacy with horror genre elements in Sinners. Michael B. Jordan(s) is superb and THAT musical sequence is a stroke of genius. 10/10, no notes 🎶
