Funny to see "elevated rom-com" discussion when this was last night's movie. Romantic, hilarious—and *very* political, couple of jokes got a "WOW" from the daughter. "Comrade Kasabian? No, I am sorry...He was called back to Russia and investigated. You can get further details from his widow."

Letterboxd thinks "O Destino" is the most obscure film I watched in 2024 - a 1922 Portuguese melodrama starring one the most famous Portuguese theatre actresses of 1st half of 20th Century. She disliked the film so much, it was her only one.

Tbh, it's rather meh, so I can see her point.

Portugal extends its the record for the most submissions without a #Oscar nomination in the International Film category.

In 2023, Mal Viver got the Jury Silver Bear at the Berlinale and this year Grand Tour got best director at Cannes. So both had some attention, even if Grand Tour was dreadful.

Rewatched Borzage's Man's Castle, this time the restored uncut version. It flows better and is more interesting but still either too romantic or not gritty enough. Hard to be sure which. His romantic treatment of misery and borderline abusive relationships don't do much for me. Tracy's great though.

From Boys in the Band to Bros and beyond
This is a personal list of films, subject to the following criteria: 1. I must have liked the film (so no Brokeback Mountain or Weekend, among others) 2. LGBT protagonists, although most likely be gay...
