I signed with Frank, then wrote another spec, called BAND OF GOLD, which sold. It didn't get made (although we're still trying). But my career had been launched. The lesson? Don't worry about selling the script. Worry about the script selling you. HEAD CASE did that for me. 6/6

One didn't seem that interested, but the other, Frank Wuliger (still my agent today!!), was more enthusiastic. He said: "This will never sell. No one is making this movie. But it's unlike anything else I've read and it made me laugh out loud. You keep doing that & you'll have a long career." 5/6

So I get my MFA degree and am trying to get an agent. Answering phones & doing coverage at a place called Addis-Wechsler. They let me write my own cover letter and send HEAD CASE to every agent they know. This was very nice of them. They genuinely wanted to help! I did and two agents responded. 4/6

The exec at HP was a guy named Chip Diggins. We are still in touch to this day! Good guy. He said they'd optioned it, but there was really nothing they could do with it. They definitely weren't making it. It was too weird. But he said they chose it because it stood out from the crowd. 3/6

It sounds dark but the tone was screwball. I got the idea while at my best friend's dad's funeral. His estranged brother showed up, surprising everyone. I added the missing head. The script was optioned by Hollywood Pictures while I was still at USC, part of a fellowship they were offering. 2/6

Cabin in the Woods almost made my list. I love it.
