The next time you see a rack of paperback novels at the market, drugstore or airport, buy a copy (or two). When you come thru again, they will be gone—never to return.

Nick Gomez’s LAWS OF GRAVITY (1992) starring newcomers Peter Greene, Edie Falco and Adam Trese, among others, with its world-changing hand-held camerawork by Jean de Segonzac, is streaming on MGM+. It still feels new. We will never forget you, Peter Greene. A heartbreaking loss.

Wednesday night at 11 pm Eastern, @TCM is airing the beloved, rarely screened 1977 TV movie, THE GATHERING, starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. An Emmy winner, it would air every Christmas. Written by James Poe (“Lillies of the Field”) and directed by Randal Kleiser, one year before “Grease”.

Thinking of LA Times film critic Sheila Benson on what would have been her 95th birthday. It’s 10:40 at night just now which was invariably the hour you’d end up on the phone with Sheila, talking movies and life. There was much laughter, always, in times with Sheila, and boundless love.

Netflix has Clint Bentley’s TRAIN DREAMS, a gorgeous new film starring an extraordinary Joel Edgerton, based on a novella by the late Denis Johnson. It’s sort of a tone poem to early America, to trees and trains and to grief. Watch it at night with the lights low and your phone put away.

Barbra Streisand’s YENTL Released 42 years ago today. I had a line party for 20 at the Cinerama Dome. I was dressed as a yeshiva boy (of course) and had a life-size record store standup of the “Superman” cover nearby. Barbra show tunes on the ghetto blaster. A grand night, a great film.

Kelly Reichardt’s marvelous 1970s era art heist film, THE MASTERMIND, starring Josh O’ Connor, is leaving theaters but check your local listings. You may only spot one showing, in the middle of your work day. Leave work early. That’s always good for the soul. So is this movie.
