But this was Shelley’s “work,” in every sense, the piecing and patching together of parts, of sewing the clothes that might bear a body through new life and death, of weaving a story capacious enough to contain her prodigious self-education, the pain of losing her children, her mother’s absence, her father’s abandonment, the exhilaration of thinking alongside her husband and friends. An excerpt from the Vespertine Wikipedia page that reads: “The eventual title change of the record reveals its changing nature. Writer and critic Mark Pytlik notes that, "where [Domestika] signified a focus of extracting magic from the platitudes of everyday life, [Vespertine] [...] suggested a creation of magic through much more powerful forces. In fine style, Björk had set out to write an album about making sandwiches. She'd ended up with an album about making love". A stylistic antecedent was her poem "Techno Prayer", published in Details magazine in July 1996, which would later be used as part of the lyrics of "All Neon Like". It featured thematic ideas such as cocooning and thread-weaving that she would later explore on Vespertine.”

found my old artist statement for my capstone project and. oh my god oh my god wait I was onto something. holy shit
A paper with an artist statement that reads: “Artist Starement: Working in illustration, I confront and make sense of the loss of a partner, of childhood, and of identity. In doing so, I explore the dissonant relationships between experience, memory, lived sensation, and image. “Vestige” is my eulogy to my late partner, Christopher Jones. In a triptych of three illustrations, I trace three different memories of us holding hands, one for each image. In recalling these memories, however, I realize I cannot perfectly picture the environment or the placement of our hands, only the lingering sensation of our touch. Each recollection deteriorates with repetition, time, and age; I am simultaneously terrified and fascinated that I could lose him all over again, if only my memory and experience of him. Because the act of recalling is an automatic and iterative process, a complementary process is vital to this work’s conception and reading. I translate the three memories into digital illustrations which are then printed onto large format paper and traced over multiple times in both marker and colored pencil. No two tracings are alike. The act of recalling memories is analogous to this illustrative process, where inconsistency and entropy emerge in the relationships between memories. The tangibility of these images serves as a substitute for these experiences, a quiet comment on my inevitable loss of him and the memories I have of him.”

Felix González-Torres’ art installation titled “Untitled (Perfect Lovers),” from 1991. It’s two clocks hung side-by-side, touching, and perfectly synchronized to the same time. A screenshot from Wikipedia that reads: “The clocks must be set to the same time initially though they may fall out of sync over the course of an exhibition. If one or both of the clocks stops functioning, the clocks are deinstalled and repaired, then reinstalled and reset to the same time, allowing the piece to theoretically last forever.” Felix González-Torres’ sketch of the art, titled “Lovers, 1988.” It’s of two clocks placed side-by-side, touching, and perfectly synchronized to the same time. Q: How many endings are there? A: One. Q: Then doesn’t that mean nothing I do matters? A: There’s something more important than reaching the end. Q: Any closing remarks? A: Thanks for taking an interest in this game. I don’t believe my game is for every person. But, to a certain type of people, attuned a certain type of way, this game can reach a meaning beyond its appearance, and find a shape in your heart. Even if there’s just one person that feels that way, I will keep making this game to grow by your side. See you again soon.
