I think this kind of nonsense is what deterred me from becoming a film critic years ago. Generally, people who say shit like “Never trust a film critic” haven’t read a single goddamn review in their life.

That’s what I said! One of my favorite things about silent era movies is that a lot of their special effects are created using magicians’ tricks. The Jim Henson movies were basically keeping a tradition alive

It did for me. I also tried to give the Wicked novel a read but I hated it. Just give me Baum’s books and any of the movies, really. That’s all I want or need.

How did they like it? Genuinely. That’s such a special movie, but I also wonder if kids are so inundated with visual effects these days that they can’t appreciate the magic of older movies like that. I’ll always be blown away by Dark Crystal or Legend. But my niece? Not so much

I’ve been thinking this is a uniquely American-made thing, our work ethic feels more like performance ethic. That end every other toxic trait got to simmer together for decades until we get “Yeah, you made a bomb but how many people did you kill?”
