Floodplain rivers are among the most valuable ecosystems, write Christina McCabe & @jdtonkin.bsky.social - we should let them roam free to better manage flood risk, support biodiversity, improve water quality and store carbon. Research published in @naturewaterjnl.bsky.social
Restraining rivers through stop banks and channels transfers and heightens flood risks downstream. Allowing them to roam free limits flooding and delivers other ecological benefits.
