Some folks call me the "ham-ster"
Text from my oldest daughter in the family chat. And so the family holiday-movie negotiations begin.

I like it that this headline runs under a column titled "The Optimist." I find it alarming, but I doubt people would want to read a column called "The Alarmist."

Spurred by the release of NOUVELLE VAGUE today, I've combined the rankings of my viewings at the two film festivals I attend annually. I posted a few thoughts about each choice in earlier fest-related ranking skeets.

Carrying these over from my last road trip for today’s road trip. Which CDs should I subject my passengers - two 17-year-olds and my 85-year-old dad - to?

#letterboxdfriday #lastfourwatched After confessing to a friend that I wasn't really a Panahi fan (bad cinephile!), I watched his Palme d'Or winner and texted the friend, "I'll never say a less-than-glowing thing about Panahi again." A great film.

#letterboxdfriday #lastfourwatched Took a second look at FRANKENSTEIN on the big screen and lowered my rating a half-star.

Thought you’d find my text exchange with my mom amusing.

One of the most important things I thought I should post about today is that I have discovered a new favorite flavor of beef jerky. What’s yours?

I know the book's title includes the word "Prayers," but it's wild to me to see an ad for a Matthew McConaughey book in ... Christianity Today. (I did read his previous book, fwiw.)

#letterboxdfriday #lastfourwatched times two again, this week thanks mostly to the Virginia Film Festival (although THE PRESIDENT’S CAKE is a Middleburg Film Festival leftover)

Tonight’s discount-day thrift-store find is a laserdisc *upgrade*! $2.99, still in its wrapper.

The local library's latest attempt to woo younger generations seems kind of strange.

Laserdisc upgrade! I can’t find my laserdisc of LONELY ARE THE BRAVE. Is it possible I sold it? Maybe! I’ve had a couple of bulk purchases but didn’t remember that one being part of any purchase. Other Kino-Lorber sale purchases are pictured separately.

NOVELLE VAGUE is a delight. I don’t know if anyone but me will think so (well, a friend I saw it with agreed), but it’s as breezy and pleasurable a history lesson as I’ve ever sat through. And then, at a used bookstore afterward, I stumbled upon this title and somehow resisted buying it!

Catching up over drinks at Miller’s with friend Brendan, who came from the Ben Mankiewicz Q&A with James Schamus. Ben walked by and said “hey” to Brendan, who’s now glowing, his night made.
