Books, bikes, beer. Guitars and dogs.
This quote, known as Phol’s Law (from the great sci-fi author Fredrick Pohl) seems to - sadly - sum up our social media influenced time: “Nothing is so good that somebody, somewhere will not hate it".

While I’m at it, thanks to @amcinematheque.bsky.social for screening one of my favorite all time films earlier this week. I confess I didn’t know it was nominated for the 1979 Best Picture Oscar and won best original screenplay. Funny, poignant and inspiring film - and who doesn’t love Paul Dooley!

Oh man, I’m out of town and as an @amcinematheque.bsky.social member I so wish I could attend this. Why do all the *best* events happen when I’m away? Go see this if you can!
Tonight! The Panel of all panels: comedian Dana Gould, critic Leonard Maltin, actor Steven Webber, historian Kliph Nesteroff, writer Scott Alexander, cartoonist KAZ, director Kevin Dougherty… and the great Drew Friedman plus me! At the Aero Cinematheque www.americancinematheque.com/now-showing/...

One of the details that caught my eye during my recent visit to #Japan were the beautifully crafted and artistic manhole covers. Here are a few from #Osaka, #Kyoto and the #MtFuju #kawaguchiko region. #art #design #cityart #streetart

It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of foolishness, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Darkness, it was the season of Darkness…

I’ve been a fan of “A Christmas Story” since forever, but I feel Jean Shepherd hasn’t gotten his proper due. His book “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash” is a favorite of mine. And if you can get your hands on any of his WOR #radio broadcasts, they are golden. #christmas #books #storytelling

Stumbled upon this outside a #movie theater in the #shinjuku area of #tokyo. Coming soon in 24-25 it indicates. 4K restoration of Paris, Texas? Guessing @purecinemapod.bsky.social @bobfreelander.bsky.social @elrickane.bsky.social will appreciate this

Apropos of nothing, I share this piece of #americana from simpler times (i.e. 2015). The “Muffler Men” of #losangeles. I pass by the old La Salsa Muffler man on PCH almost every weekend #roadsideamerica

A favorite “discovery” (a nod to @purecinemapod.bsky.social) this year is Wim Wenders‘ Perfect Days. A 2023 production (hey, any film can be a discovery) that I obviously missed, is beautiful & poetic on many levels. Yakusho’s performance is sublime, and Tokyo is gorgeously shot. #filmsky #movies

Finished Greybeard (1964) by Brian Aldiss. Set in a dystopian future where humanity has become sterile due to a nuclear accident, it follows an aging couple as they survive authoritarian regimes and religious cults. Beautifully written and very moving. Eerily prescient? #books #booksky #scifi

Do yourself a favor and read this book. Well researched, great & hilarious stories, and extremely relevant to our times. But don’t listen to me, read Steve Martin’s blurb 👇 #books #booksky #comedy

Trump is the best President the Chinese auto industry 🇨🇳 ever had. The EV issue is too complicated for him to understand — it mixes geopolitics, climate strategy and the future of U.S. manufacturing — so he outsources policy to oil guys and greedy Elon. Tragic for U.S.

Killing The IRA's Tax Credit Is a Big Win For China
The IRA's $7,500 is designed to incentivize U.S. EV supply chain investment. Without it, it's not clear if our EV supply chain will get off the ground.
