I never knew that Grouch Marx and Dennis Hopper made a generation gap drama (!!) back in 1962. Marx is a concerned father trying to talk Dennis out of marrying his 17 year old daughter played by Hopper’s wife Brooke Hayward. I’m trying to picture Groucho playing Nicholson’s part in “Easy Rider!”

I’ve had a fever for a week. Drifting in and out of sleep. Watching weird movies. Woke up to this last night. I think my brain may have fried.

Insane that this is how they marketed Jean-Luc Godard‘s “Contempt” in the U.S back in 1963. No mention of the director - all about Bardot’s backside. She was a world wide obsession. R.I.P. Brigitte.

Scott got me the grooviest Xmas present - 1966 Musicians Union directory! This book gave you the address and phone number of every union musician in town. Used when you’ve had a session and needed a guitar or sax player to be at the studio in 15 minutes… This was when legends walked the earth.

A Christmas Eve present to myself - super rare 16mm print of Rudy Vallée singing Groucho Marx’s signature tune “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” written by the “Over the Rainbow” team Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen.

I’m hosting a screening for the Writers Branch of the Academy of Elaine May’s hysterical classic “A NEW LEAF” on Wednesday December 17th with special guests screenwriter Karen McCullah, writer/producer Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, and writer/producer Katie Silberman. www.academymuseum.org/en/programs/...
A New Leaf
A pitch-black screwball costarring a hilariously deplorable Walter Matthau as a newly broke socialite, this kooky comedy marked a trio of firsts for the pioneering Elaine May.
