It takes me by surprise to see my book cited in an obituary for former Southern Baptist Convention CEO Morris Chapman. But I'm grateful this aspect of Chapman's legacy was not sidestepped - his betrayal of clergy sex abuse survivors & his keeping of a secret list of clergy abusers. #ThisistheSBC

"She kneels down, and from the quietness of copper reaches out."

This is Portlandia, the 2nd largest copper repousse statue in the US, after the Statue of Liberty.

I ❤️ Portland.

Feeling grateful today for top military leaders -- serious people who take seriously their oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

"At the heart of evangelical faith is ecstatic worship of a king & adherence to the word of his earthly representatives. Obeisance & obedience are built into this structure... Authoritarianism harmonizes here like a choir carol." - @swordsjew.bsky.social

While Trump calls for a crackdown on the "radical left," the data tells a different story. Most political murders come from the right, according to an analysis of the Cato Institute.

"They said what they would do & we did not listen. Then they did what they said they would do."

So begins this novel, CHRISTIAN NATION, published in 2013 as a fictional memoir of America's transition to theocratic authoritarian rule. What was presented as dystopian now seems prescient.

"What is perhaps most outrageous...is how routinely the largest, most bureaucratic of mission boards, Southern Baptists' IMB, has quietly 'sent home' problematic missionaries & apparently done nothing to stop their ongoing ministry...in the United States. - @hollybfletcher.bsky.social

“When this administration came into power, they were bragging about their strategy to flood the zone. It turns out that the legal community is flooding the zone & they’re the ones that can’t keep up. That gives me motivation every day, and hope.” - Abbe Lowell

People say that supporting a child-rapist is a red line MAGA won't cross. But is it? White evangelicals are a huge part of MAGA, and again & again, we've seen how white evangelicals will support child-raping pastors. "Stop talking about it," they say. #EpsteinFiles #ChurchToo

Pro-Life, really? "Women living in abortion-ban states are nearly 2x as likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth or soon after giving birth..." and "Maternal mortality rose 56% in Texas in the first full year of the state's abortion ban." (from the summer print issue of @msmagazine.com)

Yup. Me too. "Duck and cover" drills in elementary school. And even as a kid, having seen pictures of mushroom clouds, I always wondered how in the world my school desk was going to protect me against THAT.

In telling the story of the deadliest hurricane in history, this book holds a lot of lessons. Tragically, I fear they're lessons we may have to relearn. "Galveston, oh Galveston."

Ah yes. I remember that too... along with his Oscar-worthy weeping performance.

This is the human cost of the Trump regime's reckless funding cuts: over 300,000 deaths, including child deaths from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea & pneumonia.

"I share this story now, because it is upper echelon Southern Baptist leadership who are attempting to block this bill from full passage."

@sarafortexas.bsky.social reveals: Southern Baptists are trying to block a bill that would ban nondisclosure agreements in sexual assault cases. #ThisistheSBC

Good news! Southern Baptist Convention membership has fallen for the 18th straight year.

The SBC's decline began in 2006, the year I did my first sidewalk press conference about SBC clergy sex abuse... just sayin'. #ThisistheSBC

Given this new defiant post from the White House, it's a good time to consider this 🧵 from @asharangappa.bsky.social.

14 years ago, I was diagnosed with the first of 2 separate & independent invasive cancers. Things were bleak. I was terrified.

Long journey of surgeries, treatments, rehabs & recoveries followed.

Gob-smacked with #gratitude for the sheer joy of still being here. #cancerversary
