Yeah, there's undoubtedly a range of contributing factors and this is a general trend, not stratified into crime type or age groups so the correlation may be stronger or weaker for different sub-groups.

Most of the reduction in homicides happened during the four years before Bukele was first elected. After he was elected, he stopped using the Bogota Protocol to tally homicides, so many homicides no longer get counted as homicides, making the numbers appear lower than they really are.

They did the same with COVID deaths. Stopped counting them in the official COVID mortality figures to hold out that Salvadorans weren't dying at high levels. Luckily, the vast number of excess deaths were still tallied in the normal mortality database, so we get a clear picture of reality.

It's been fascinating to observe from the outside. I spent a lot of time looking at his last election and noted his party won 90% of the seats with 70% of the popular vote compared to the previous election where they held 66% of the vote and seats. Very successful gerrymandering it seems.
