🧑‍🎓 Australian students pay more in HECS than the gas industry pays in PRRT!

💸 But Big Gas are in Brisbane today trying to get our politicians to cut their taxes even MORE!

Populist policies that clash with evidence-based criminology research might help the ALP win the next election, but the "serious consequences" we all face could be more severe crime outcomes in the long run. This could be short-term gain for long-term pain.

In Victoria, there's a clear link between crime and socioeconomic disadvantage. Postcodes are a more reliable predictor of crime rates than country of birth or migration status.

A good piece on the growing issue of wealth inequality in Australia by economist Millie Muroi.
We must remember that broadening inequality contributes to increased crime rates, poorer health outcomes, less educational equity, and degraded social cohesion.

If we’re focused on fairness, it’s not the rich we should be worrying about
The problem is not necessarily that young people pay too much tax, but that there are some Australians who pay little to none.

This could be a horrible tale, but wouldn't it be wiser to let nature take its course so that the koalas that survive will be the most genetically resilient in the future?
Or is culling koalas really the best thing to do here?

When you can predict health outcomes based on postcodes, the issue is much more than individual choice.
Mothers and kids in the outer suburbs don't choose to be more obese than those in the inner suburbs. Obesigenic environments drive health inequities.

Postcode lottery means some mothers – and their babies – are more likely to be overweight or obese
Moving from Melbourne’s north to the west brought home to Maddison Dass what researchers have just revealed – there is not equal opportunity for health in Melbourne.

This is a friendly reminder that biological sex is complicated.

This table isn't from some radical leftist propaganda pamphlet; it's from a current evidence-based sports medicine textbook.

Some people are born male, some are born female, and others are born with more complex biological variations.

I wrote this piece about the little known Aboriginal groups that were dispersed by colonial settlers before the Victorian gold rush. It's history that few people living in the Macedon Ranges are aware of. I think local history is incredibly important to remember and share.

This is fascinating—the Ozempic Effect.
People on GLP-1 inhibitors typically ready less discretionary foods and increase their intake of nutrient dense food like fruit and vegetables.
With the widespread use of the meds, overall food consumption might drop by 6%

Obesity is complex.
1-in-4 Aussie kids are overweight or obese.
Childhood obesity has tripled since the 1980s; it's significantly higher for living in regional areas, those from poor families, and those living in single-parent households.
