Pacific Lamprey poacher/trafficker caught. Lamprey are an important part of the ecosystem & to tribal peoples & deserve our protections. Good job wardens and the deputy district attorney who prosecuted, especially for less known, less appreciated species. #NoTrashFish

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.
For-Profit Companies Can’t Easily Replace NOAA’s Weather-Forecasting Prowess
Replicating the abilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fleet of weather satellites would take time and a lot of money—and expose private companies to a large amount of…

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics.

Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.*

So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?

All of this this is in addition to massive cuts to scientific research that have been mandated in recent days. It's hard to see this as anything other than an intentional decimation of critical public safety services, and also of science in general, in the U.S.

Ultimately, we point out that increasing hydroclimate whiplash (as discussed in our recent review paper) may be an under-appreciated contributor to increasing wildfire risk with #ClimateChange (especially in grasslands & shrublands, as in SoCal, & mixed/semi-arid forests). [6/8]

Also, even a temporary or partial interruption in NOAA/NWS 24/7 lifesaving services--which are often used in an hour-by-hour (even minute-by-minute) context--would have this effect. The NWS is a critical public utility and it would be extremely difficult to rebuild if torn down.

I want to be clear: the private sector, as it presently exists, *cannot* quickly spin up to fill any void left by substantial dismantling of #NOAA. Full stop. If that were to happen, people would die in extreme weather events who would not have otherwise, & economy would suffer.

You may see misinformation about water availability, linking the Palisades Fire to statewide policy. There is no link. See statement from LADWP. They had the water to fill all the existing tanks ahead of time, and did. The challenges have nothing to do with lack of supply or smelt in the Delta.

Meta is dropping fact-checking to avoid anti-conservative bias- but is there actually evidence of bias?
We this test empirically & find that conservatives

So suspension isn't necessarily evidence of bias www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Differences in misinformation sharing can lead to politically asymmetric sanctions - Nature
