It's wild to read more and more and realize that the West's (and in particular America's) views Japan is not new whatsoever. The fetish has been the mainstream view for something like 150 years. I still haven't divorced myself from that perspective, but I'm trying, and it's exciting to get closer.

Ok well I am reading this photo collection book hybrid by the Associated Press but it "doesn't count" in my mind.

Also now I get to look at books like this and know that they're completely wrong about Hirohito. Anyway time to turn the page and learn about how Americans did good probably

The experience of reading it was weird. I would read like 20 pages and be kind of bored, feel like it was getting too much into minutiae; then the huge collection of facts would just kind of click into a gestalt.

Still haven't picked my next Japanese history book. Maybe I should take a breather
