Spate of new followers usually means two things: Elon’s been up to no good and people have found the pollster list @cwp-weir.bsky.social created. Welcome.

Am still just about on holiday, but political polling posts will resume next week.

In the meantime, here’s me demolishing some ribs.

We asked 2,000 people to give us one word to describe Keir Starmer.

Of note, the UK’s immigration policy (64%) was more likely to be seen by the UK public as a cause of the riots than the murders in Southport (59%). Which I think speaks to how the unrest mutated quite dramatically in a short period of time.
August 18, 2024 at 9:40 AM
The public think those taking part (82%) were most to blame for the civil unrest, with far-right organisations (75%) and social media companies (73%) also seen as responsible. That’ll be something else for ministers reviewing Online Safety Bill to think about.
August 18, 2024 at 9:39 AM
More importantly, who does the public say is at fault? Tommy Robinson is the individual the public hold most responsible, but Nigel Farage is second – with half saying he is “responsible”.

Aside from anything else, this will likely have an impact on the Con leadership race.
August 18, 2024 at 9:39 AM
Let’s dig into who thought Starmer did well / badly. Labour voters (74%) unsurprisingly are the most supportive, although one in five (19%) say he didn’t manage well. It’s Reform UK voters who particularly thought he did poorly – even Con voters are more evenly split.
August 18, 2024 at 9:38 AM
Starmer is also seen to have done a better job than the government more broadly, albeit narrowly, and better than his Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper. His prominent role in the response has likely driven this.
August 18, 2024 at 9:37 AM
Unsurprisingly, the public is most likely to say police handled the unrest well. But worth noting they are more likely to say that Starmer did a good job than not – contrary to some commentary.
