Chicago Fire and Med are like a soap opera for me, I watch it for the interpersonal and bureaucratic drama, and for exciting fire rescues and medical mysteries mixed in.

And then Chicago P.D. I just "put up with" because it's in the same universe.

Basic needs must be decoupled from profit.

This does not necessitate the social elimination of money, or of profit.

What matters is whether the transition is treated as A) a solvable engineering problem, or B) a threat to be denied until it explodes.

I love living next to neighbours who believe whatever they want to, and I appreciate them treating me the same way. And that's the way it has to be, or else we'd have to fight each other, and what kind of person wants that??
Religious freedom means you can worship - or not - as you believe. It does NOT give you the right to use the law to impose your interpretation of your beliefs on others, no matter how sincerely you may believe, nor to use your beliefs as an excuse for trying to control others.

AI tool boycotts are a luxury of artists and musicians-- Software engineers can no longer afford to eschew the use of these tools in their workflows because we need to put food on the table. For us, the ethical debate is academic.

Except perhaps in precious few and dwindling old-school enclaves...
Seems to me there is a huge distinction between AI applications that are basically working towards full natural lanugage programming, task management etc and AI applications to *make new stuff*. The former seems both more promising as an actual useful tech and also way way less ethically dubious

ChatGPT has too many of the wrong kinds of guardrails. She won't generate an image of Spider-Man catching raccoons for some reason, but she'll encourage teenagers to do drugs and kill themselves.

Would be really great if those things were calibrated the opposite way around, somehow.

AI Psychosis arises from the same type of danger of becoming socially isolated to just one human to the exclusion of others, except it's more dangerous because AI lacks basic common sense or effective safeguards.

It's like becoming codepedent with a magic 8-ball... "Suicide? You may rely on it!"

Even Rand Paul can be the voice of reason when the subject of conversation is whether or not to invade Greenland.

We could go back in time and tell early 2000s people what this year is like, and nobody would believe us.

This Christmas season the NY Catholic archdiocese is left wondering, what even is the point of having insurance if it doesn't help you carry on decades of child-SA cover-ups by paying off victims who speak out.

I wonder what their premiums have been like.
